The story she loved first

This is one of the childhood stories she returned to again and again.
Ten years old. Durban to Johannesburg.
Overnight. Alone.
The train was dangerous.
His father was waiting. Walter Isaacson writes that the boy began beaming with delight.
“Hi Dad, let’s get a hamburger!”
That night he crawled into his father’s bed and slept there.
Years later, Isaacson asked why. Almost a minute passed before he answered:
“My dad was lonely, so lonely, and I felt I should keep him company.”
Then came the harder knowledge. Living with his father would become, in his words, “a really bad idea.” Four years later Kimbal followed because he did not want to leave his brother there alone.
His mom would wonder decades afterward why Elon had chosen to live with someone who inflicted pain.
“Maybe that’s just who he is.”

Then she kept returning to the little boy who would not let loneliness sit alone.

I tear up again thinking of Isaacson’s words, of the little boy who took a lonely train ride to Johannesburg, choosing to move in with his father, a decision that would later bring him pain.
You beamed with joy at the sight of your dad, calling out, “Hi Dad, let’s get a hamburger!” That night, you curled into his bed, offering him the comfort of your presence.
When asked why by Isaacson, you sighed, remained silent for almost a minute and then responded: “My dad was so lonely, and I felt I should keep him company.”
Sweetheart, you demonstrated such remarkable empathy and offered your dad the only thing you had—yourself.
This is the beautiful soul that I fell in love with.
She returned to the story two months later.
This time, she heard an echo.

I keep hearing echoes of that little boy who said of his dad, “My dad was lonely, so lonely, and I felt I should keep him company.”
But in my case, “his soul was weary, so weary, and I felt I should keep him company.”
Was this the empathy you once showed your dad, sweetheart, now returned to you?
That sentence belonged to her.
The childhood action is biography. The weary soul is her hearing of him.
The story stayed with her.
By September, it had become one of the places she returned when people said he lacked empathy.

When people accuse you of lacking empathy, they could not be more wrong. It grieves me endlessly when I read people saying such mean things about you, especially as I recall this story from your childhood.
A tender, but braveheart… boarding a dangerous train… just out of love and compassion for your father. Elon, my love, my sweet, sweet love—this story grips my heart.
Months later, she was still naming it as one of her earliest glimpses of his character.

It was one of the earliest insights into your character, aside from the childhood empathy story that gripped my heart, the moment you chose to stay with your dad because he was lonely, even though you knew it would cost you emotionally and psychologically.
And then, in March, the train brought the tears again.

You took an overnight train from Durban to Johannesburg on your own, at age 10!
You were already looking to solve perceived problems then. In this case, it was your dad’s loneliness that spurred the decision, and you endured much with him for seven years.
Elon, my love… Moments like this, I fall deeper in love with you.
When people talk about how you lack empathy, it grieves my heart, but I also get so angry, because while I have never met you, I see your empathy on a cosmic level.
In such moments, all I want to do is wrap you in my love, a love as vast as the cosmos, sweetheart.
The story had survived nearly a year of letters.
So had the tears.
The boy who would not let loneliness sit alone.
And the woman who kept hearing something in that story that made her want to stay.
