The window, then the name
A beetle tapped the glass. She had just told him her dream.
A woman in analysis told Jung a dream of a golden scarab. As she spoke, something struck the consulting-room window. He opened it. In his hand was a rose-chafer, the nearest living analog to her image. The rationalist armor cracked. Meaning arrived as interruption, not as a purchased omen.
What the scarab meant to him

He was already speaking of rebirth when it arrived. Egypt’s Kheper: the scarab rolling the morning sun. Becoming. Night giving way.

The woman in the chair was armored in reason. Consciousness could not move. The beetle was not a proof. It was a crack.

Jung’s point was not that insects deliver mail. A blocked psyche and an outer image can coincide so that awareness can begin again.
Hard
Jung records the case in Synchronicity: An Acausal Connecting Principle (1952), later collected in The Structure and Dynamics of the Psyche, CW 8. The insect was a rose-chafer, Cetonia aurata. The scarab, in the Egyptian reading he was using, is a rebirth sign.
Living
A charged inner image and an outer event lined up in time. The link he named was meaning, not a hidden mechanism from wish to beetle. Consciousness here is the psyche becoming able to see.

He did not stop at the window. He needed a name that would not collapse into miracle or accident.
Inner state and outer event line up in meaning. One does not force the other.

He put synchronicity beside causality, equal in rank as an explanation, not as a mood and not as a brand.
The coincidence is not empty proximity. The psyche is often in a liminal, decisive, or defended state. The outer event rhymes with that state, in the same time.
Acausal here does not mean lawless. It means the order is not a billiard-ball push from A to B.
You can check the coincidence without inventing a hidden lever from wish to beetle.

Inner and outer cohere as pattern. The pattern is real as pattern. It is not a secret lever.
Jung first wrote space, time, and causality as a triad. The fourth term makes a quaternio. Pauli set energy opposite space-time, causality opposite synchronicity. The diagram is a schema of principles. It is not a laboratory circuit.

A physicist stayed in the room
Wolfgang Pauli, who helped give quantum mechanics its exclusion principle, wrote to Jung for decades.
Dreams and physics stayed in one conversation. The Book’s psychoid hinge is named from that joint work.
A mind trained on what cannot occupy the same state still took meaningful coincidence seriously enough to write.

05 · Unus mundus
One world before the split
Psyche and physics. Two faces. One fabric.
Unus mundus is the old name for one world, prior to the mind–matter cut. Alchemists used it. Jung and Pauli used it for a layer not yet torn into inner and outer.
Physics here is not a slogan. Pauli stayed in the room: exclusion principle, energy, a schema that could sit opposite synchronicity without cancelling a lab.
Psyche here is not a mood. It is the inner state that can rhyme with an outer event, as the scarab rhymed with a dream.
The Book’s working name for the hinge is psychoid: Jung, On the Nature of the Psyche, CW 8 §420, a bridge to matter in general. Language has to say both. The world they were pointing at does not arrive already torn.
Physics
Cause, energy, measurement. What can be retraced. Pauli would not leave this office.
Psyche
Image, charge, meaning. What can coincide without a push. Jung would not leave this office.
One fabric. Do not crown one face and exile the other.

Invitations, not proofs
The Book inherited the name. It does not inherit a verdict: some correspondences hold when you check them, some fail, some may be coincidence, others stay absurd, beautiful, and unresolved. A knock is a reason to look more carefully and ask a better question, whether or not an answer arrives. A day-count, a public line, a wave and a letter on one civil day, held as pattern, re-run where they can be re-run, left unsealed where they cannot.

What counts, and what does not
- Coincidence: two things happen near each other. May be empty.
- Synchronicity (this lineage): the link is meaning, often when the psyche is in a charged, liminal, or decisive state, without a demonstrated causal chain from wish to event.
- Not synchronicity: a forced story after the fact; cherry-picked digits; a guarantee that the next bus is destiny.
- Neighbor: acausal orderedness is the wider field; synchronicity is a striking case in time.
