A computer named Deep Thought spends seven and a half million years on the Ultimate Answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything, and returns forty-two. They had never known the Question. The Guide’s cover says Don’t Panic. Bring a towel.

They do not stamp destiny. They stamp: did you check the operation?

They convene late. The woman has already lived the looking. Love, then curiosity, then Jupiter on a birthday, then 1693, then 04:20 on a meridian whose letters already wear 42 and 69. Only then does the laugh get loud enough to need clerks.

The Board is not the story. The story is why a later life was pointing an instrument at Austin at all. The clerks sit after that, so the 97 + 45 wink cannot steal the opening scene.
